Mom Advice

Every other night for the past 5 nights Seth has woken up out of a dead sleep SCREAMING! The first night he quieted down rather quickly and went back to sleep, the second night Roland ended up sleeping on Seth's floor with him because he wouldn't calm down, and last night we didn't give in, we only went in to try and calm him down once, BUT he screamed on and off for 3 hours! So I'm at a loss...

Is he having night terrors?
Does he have a belly ache? (he said two out of the three nights, "Mommy poop.")
Does he have an ear infection?

I just don't know!

The sitter says that he is "going" like normal at her house, but he doesn't "go" after dinner so one suggestion was to mix a little prune puree into his applesauce or mix some prune juice with water and give it to him.

If he is having night terrors a teacher friend said you just have to wait it out and Ro and I have to take turns sleeping.

I don't think it is an ear infection because he isn't running a low grade fever and his mood is fine.

So after all of this babbling, please offer some words of advice or just positive energy! PLEASE!!

Must be something in the air, Maya has been doing the exact same thing! I was thinking belly ache or night terrors too... Sophia used to have terrible night terrors, but I don't remember them being like this! Maya flails around when you try to pick her up, and screams louder if you don't.. that's why I'm thinking belly ache? Who knows!!

Oops..meant to sign my name to that, although I'm sure you know who this is! If you figure out what's wrong with him, send it my way, we need sleep too!

Hi.. I am one of Maureen's friends and I happened to see you on her myspace page and was interested when I saw the word "night terrors" For the past two weeks my husband and I have been waking up at night to my son screaming. We both run upstairs (our bedroom in on the first floor) to find my son flailing his legs and arms. Sometimes he has his eyes open and stares right at us. If we say his name or touch him he screams louder. It has lasted up to an hour. Yesterday he had one during his nap. He also started banging his head which is quite disturbing. I fear sometimes that something is wrong but all of the research and doctor advice says that he has no memory of it and it is in no way harmful to him. They say the only people that suffer are the parents. I have read that night terrors occur more often when the child is going through a milestone (growth spirt, potty training) or when there is a lack of sleep (missed naps, getting out of usual bed routine) or sickness. We have found that when the night terrors are most frequent is when he does not get his naps during the day or in the case of him having one during his nap-he did not sleep well the night before. With the holidays my son has been out of his routine so I am being really strict and seeing if we see a change. I know how you feel but remember you are not alone and this does not mean that your son has something wrong. It is just a phase (the is horrifying for the parents) but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We may go to a sleep specialist if they continue after getting him back in his routine so I will let you know if I learn anything new. Please feel free to contact me through myspace. I am Maureen's second friend Kate. Best of luck! Oh and PS.... They say the worst thing you can do is try to wake the child (turn on lights etc) or say their name or touch them. I have read that they may feel like you are attacking them. They will sometimes look right at you as if they are completely awake but in fact they are asleep. They may also see you and see you as something they are afraid of. The best thing to do (and trust me it is not easy) is make sure they are safe and let the night terror end on its own.
